The Trophy (Animals Have No Religion I)

2011 - Wood, antlers, silkscreen on cotton, embroidered emblems

This work is inspired by Raden Ayu Kartini (21 April 1879 – 17 September 1904), a pioneer of women’s emancipation and education in Indonesia. Kartini shared her thoughts about the problems of her society in a collection of letters, which to this day remain urgent and relevant. In the letters Kartini argued that the world would be more peaceful if there were no religion to provide grounds for disagreement, discord and offence. She wrote: “Religion must guard us against committing sins, but more often, sins are committed in the name of religion.”
