Square Body – Kanda Empat

2009 - 3 dresses, light installation, video, audio ‘Quartet for square body’ by Tony Maryana.

The dresses in this work are inspired by ‘Kanda Empat’ (four Kanda), four protectors or “brothers” who, according to Balinese belief, guide us through life, starting from six months in the womb. These four forces change their entity and shape, depending on our age and stage in life. I used shadows of animals, which guide us like human partners and help us to transmit ideas. These archetype figures are our transporters through time and the four figures surround (protect) the human body that is at its centre. It is like a spiritual shelter, the invisible layer of our existence.
