This work is inspired by the painting ‘I am longing for a couple of kids’ (1997, acrylic on canvas, 35 x 50 cm) by the late Balinese painter I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih. The painting shows a woman breastfeeding two fishes.
I am inspired by her straightforward poise and the way she uses humour to address human (not only female) corporeal issues like pain, longing, pleasure, sex. I often work with costumes or coverings because I am interested in the importance of the physical appearance. ‘Pure Passion – After Murni’ challenges the viewer to “experience” and “feel” the cruel, the scary, the funny, the erotic, the taboo, the real, the fake.
