Crash Team

2002 - Helmets made from buffalo horn, video

What would happen if you could only see a dance by flashlight? You would have to guess the movements in between the flashes. The performance Crash Team is like a persiflage on tourists and newcomers who like to see reality through the eye of the camera. The two dancers, skilled in traditional Javanese dance techniques, and wearing helmets made of buffalo horns, were asked to crash into each other instead of fighting with daggers. The human behaviour involving struggle and fighting is a basic principle in ‘traditional’ expression, for example in the stories from the Mahabharata epic, as well as in the foundation of current global power structures.
