A personal Diorama

2019 - barkcloth, acrylic, digital print on wood

For the exhibition ‘Fomo/Jomo – Hacking Modernity’s Dualism’ at Rubanah Underground Hub, Jakarta,  the artists were asked to reflecting on the archive of diorama-making in a number of national museums in Java that were made by the sculptor Edhi Sunarso (1932-2016). These archives of these diorama processes show the complexity of procedural, bureaucratic, technical production, as well as the emotional struggle of creating the miniature of our national history, related to the different political eras. Each event important in history has told and untold stories. I translated the diorama into a dress where the public can discover a personal diorama. This diorama is like the opposite of an object based diorama, where specific settings bring forward a narration, in which the public is confronted with a time frame in history told by the ones in power.

With predilection for the human body as the principal material I made this diorama, in which the spectator is encouraged to peep and see a glimpse of an inner turmoil.
